Rest Bothering Modern Day Slave Owners


In the world of the NBA today, marketing for ticket sales seems to solely be based on what stars will be playing that day. Whether you have a star player on your team, or if you’re playing against one of the NBA’s elite, studies show that prices are at the highest when there’s a star in town.

Well recently, and I put this disclaimer out there, that I am no “Lebron James lover”, Lebron James and his teammates are being rested by their coach during back to back games. The Cleveland Cavaliers are currently in first place in the Eastern Conference, and have a plethora of NBA “stars” on their team. When Lebron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love come to your city, tickets sell out.

Well, the owners and commissioner Adam Silver, now have an issue with star players resting during games. However, it has everything to do with THEIR money, and nothing to do with an actual concern that players who play 82 regular season  games, plus a good 16 more in the playoffs, get tired. When the “slave” aka the black stars of the NBA, don’t show up to work, the ratings plummet.

A month ago, the Golden State Warriors decided to sit Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant for a back to back series. That was a small shock wave, that the NBA owners felt, seeing that Curry, Thompson and Durant are also “seat filling” stars. The issues Adam Silver has stated, paint a picture that while you play many home games, a lot of the teams not in your conference, only get to see you play in their city once.

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors

Hence, lets take a look at the famous head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Greg Popovich. for years, and literally I mean years, since the early 2000s, Coach Pop has had a history of resting his starters down the final stretch of the season. Nobody blinked an eye, except for maybe fantasy basketball enthusiast. If you know anything about the Spurs, then you can automatically see my issue. The Spurs resting players was never an issue because outside of a very quiet “star” in Tim Duncan, the Spurs have never been a star ticket selling team.

If you ask me, The Atlanta Hawks could rest Dwight Howard for the remainder of the season, and no one in the NBA would bat an eye. Now if MVP candidates Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder, or James Harden of the Houston Rockets, were to take a rest (even though both have spoken out and said they won’t be resting), the public uproar would be outrageous.

My view is this, as a fan of the Atlanta Hawks, when the Cavs come to town, it’s a big deal because Kyrie Irving is one of my favorite NBA players, so naturally I want to see him play. But if he was to rest during that game, I would be upset and I would feel like my money is wasted. However, being a real human being, I can understand the rest factor. This isn’t 2K, this is real life, and sometimes fatigue really does play a factor.

What we do know is this, Adam Silver has sent a letter to the owners reprimanding them for resting players, with threats of rule changes in the off season. Conversely, James made a statement saying “You can stop the coaches from resting players”.

So, who will win this twisted battle?

Ever listened to an album that told you the story of your life before you were ready to acknowledge it?

That was Because The Internet for me. I can still remember my fangirl-esque screams when Donald let us

know he was about to put out another album. Hearing “The Worst Guys” set my heart ablaze because it

felt like somebody ripped a page out of my soul song. “In the garage, I had a menage, and murdered the

vag’, But, afterwards, it was awkward as fuck, Cause I’m nervous as fuck and could not get it up” How

could you not love an honest man? I emotionally became The Boy whose story was finished using

Because The Internet as I followed the cookie crumbs that Donald Glover left for his fans in anticipation.

The Boy’s life his reality. Donald wished for the opportunity to inspire and educate those who love him

and I truly believed his goal was accomplished. The album, like its creator, wasn’t perfect, but it was

authentic. Glover posted a series of Instagram photos proving that his vulnerability is nothing to be afraid

of. And after overcoming depression and record label objections, Because The Internet was born. Just

being aware of the amount of work that went into the final product made me love it. Nothing could ever

prepare me for the actual emotional attachment that came with listening to the album though. Many critics

describe the album as messy and lacking direction, I, of course, disagree. I believe he opted for an

emotional order rather than a logical or conventional order. Because The Internet is a journey to

I listened to the album five times trying to figure out just what makes this album the album and it

wasn’t until one night by myself I found my answer. Because The Internet to me feels like

Glover’s New Year. Allow me the next paragraph to bring you up to speed. The New Year

symbolizes the concept of a clean slate or a fresh start. One that makes people want to be better,

or so I’ve heard it said. The New Year for most people has a set date. But with the correct

mindset, a new year can occur at any time. In 2013, Gambino’s New Year occurred December

6th. He knew with the release of this album, he would be on to bigger and better things in his life.

And unfortunately for Mc DJ fangirls like me that meant a career that was not focused on music.

Donald went radio silent on all social media December 10th, 2014 (almost 6 months after the

completion of his Deep Web Tour for the album), but it was recently announced that we will be

hearing from … or rather seeing Donald soon.

I struggled with writing this article at first because I couldn’t, for the life of me, pinpoint what

about this album kept making my heart cry. I searched through old memories for those first five

listens trying to patch a quilt of old emotions together for this article. Until I experienced my

own personal mental new year on Christmas night of 2015. I came to the conclusion that this

album allowed Donald to purge all the emotions and problems of his life at the time. He was

tired of being repressed and misunderstood. He was tired of the judgment and of society’s

expectations of him as a person. Because The Internet served as lyrical documentation for his

emotional progress. He used Because The Internet to inform us that he was no longer The Boy

acknowledge it? This is and continues to be Because The Internet for me. When listening, I can’t

just admire his immaculate use of metaphors and ability to work in such perfect harmony with

his producer. I must respect the scars he bears with this album. I have to appreciate his courage

emotional relief and health. [[Prelude]]

and willingness to wait for someone to understand this album. I absolutely cannot overlook the

fact that I am still learning from the lessons of this album. And I am obligated to acknowledge

the emotional and spiritual growth that Donald Glover experienced as his period as Childish

This article arose from the ashes of this simple question asked of me 6 months ago: “What is

your favorite album?” I was instructed to write about my relationship with the music and the

experiences that I relate to that music. After about 15 minutes of thought I had made the decision

that Because The Internet was my favorite album. I had very different reasons for choosing the

album then; but now, as I am preparing to close the college undergrad chapter of my life, I am

able to say that this album accurately articulates the emotional progress that I have made as a

person. With Because The Internet, Gambino warned me that this growth would hurt like hell.

Because The Internet reminds me of the wounds that life can leave. But it also reminds me that I

can make it through those hard times. And this album gives me great joy, because finally, I know

now just why this album makes my heart cry.

Kendrick Lamar Leads All Nominees For 58th Annual Grammy Awards


Well the Grammy’s are here and everyone is trying to decided if they finally got it right. Most people will be happy to know that Kendrick Lamar leads all the nominees with 11 nominations in 9 different categories.

Now I won’t post all the nominations, but I’ll link you to them at the end.

My biggest disappointment in the Grammy’s this year is the fact the Big Sean did not get nominated for Rap Album of the Year after dropping his best, most complete project to date with “Dark Sky Paradise”.

Check out some of the noticeable nominations below. Spoiler alert, Drake got nominated for a mixtape and a diss track…..just ponder that.

I’ll be making my case via twitter that Big Sean should have gotten more than his weak nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collab for One Man Can Change The World, which won’t win because Glory by Common and John Legend are in that too.

Seahawks Defense Hold Secret Meeting After Loss to Panthers

According to NFL Networks Omar Ruiz, the “Legion of Boom” held an impromptu meeting at their lockers after Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers. The defense has allowed 5 come back victories in the 4th quarter this season and they are not pleased. 

  While the details of the meeting haven’t been disclosed yet, we can assume it revoles around the earlier mentioned issue and not, as TMZ reported, a plan to get QB Russell Wilson to leave girlfriend Ciara.
