Bigger and Better: The 2013 BET Awards Recap

Flying entrances, stellar performances and an even better line-up of A-list stars were the highlight of this year’s BET Awards in Los Angles, California.

Taking place Sunday June 30th at the Nokia Theater at LA Live, the awards was just “one Beyonce performance away from amazing” as much of my twitter time said. In my personal opinion the show was one of these best I have seen in years!

The show opened with a stellar performance by none other than Chris Brown. The dance moves were on point and vocals were much improved from the last time we got to see Brown perform at the Billboard Awards. He performed a melody of his singles, “Fine China” and “Don’t Think They Know”, from the upcoming album “X” in addition to a brand new song featuring the hot MC Nicki Minaj to close the performance!

The host of the event was comedian and actor Chris Tucker. I was skeptical about Tucker at first because it’s been so long since I have seen him do anything funny, but to viewers delight, he was actually pretty great. The funniest skit Tucker delivered that night had to be when he did his own performance to late legend Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature”, fully equipped with the dance moves and even vocals! It was pretty hilarious.

The night continued with tons of amazing performances, including ones by Mariah Carey, Robin Thicke to even Beenie Man and R. Kelly.

I can’t possible give a recap on every one, but lets take a look at my “Must See Moments” now.

My top 3 performances of the night had to include the Charlie Wilson tribute, which featured Pharell Williams, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, Jamie Foxx and India Arie. Charlie Wilson himself even grabbed the mic a few times to show the world that he still has it.

Check out the old school vibes

Secondly, I would have to say that Kendrick Lamar stole the show a couple of times, but none other like when he came out and performed “M.A.A.D. City” and “Don’t Kill My Vibe” with a surprise appearance on stage by none other than Erykah Badu to add her sultry sound to Kendrick’s hit song!

Please Dont Kill My Vibe

Lastly…..I would like to give all the props in the world to Atlanta’s own, Ciara. I have been waiting months to see her perform “Body Party” live on stage and my dream finally came true on Sunday at the awards. Ciara started off with her new single featuring a hotter performance with Nicki Minaj called “Im Out”. She did not sing much during that song but showed the world once again that being able to dance helps out a lot. Once the lights dimmed, Ciara began to sing “Body Party” acapella. She sounded so amazing that she continued to sing throughout the whole performance and shut it down with her sultry dance moves.

Her Body, Is Your Party

I enjoyed much of the show, from the presenters to the other performances as well. Tamela Mann took us to church by performing her hit song “Take Me to the King”. J. Cole blessed the stage with “Crooked Smile” and brought out a tattered looking Miguel for a stunning rendition of “Power Trip”. Miguel did not drop kick anyone this time, but took the stage in 3 different performances, including his own set featuring Kendrick Lamar and even appeared on stage with R&B legend Mariah Carey.

The winners of the night did not really surprise anyone, but you can look for yourself at who won right here:
